What does the “Real Time Mario” meme mean?
Real Time Mario is funny and eerie at once: you recognize Mario, but the moving head, voice and facial tics pull him away from the familiar image. It is the uncanny valley turned comic. People cite it for a pop-culture object that is both amusing and slightly disturbing, or to describe a strange childhood memory. In remix videos it plays a wild character capable of extreme or absurd reactions. That mix of familiarity and strangeness explains its lasting cult status.
