What does the “Skifcha” meme mean?

Skifcha stands for the unbothered cat who bobs along to jerky music with paper glasses on his nose. The clash between the animal’s serious look and the dubstep bass is what makes people laugh. It gets shared to caption a night where everyone keeps dancing, to react to an electronic track, or just to brighten a chat. The image recalls both early-2010s web culture and the humor of pet videos.

Where does the “Skifcha” meme come from?

According to Know Your Meme, Russian photographer and presenter Denis Borisovich began posting Vimeo videos of his Siamese cat Skifcha, wearing white paper glasses, on May 23, 2011. The first one parodied the “dramatic prairie dog” clip. On February 15, 2012, he uploaded “stereo skifcha,” where the cat grooves to the dubstep track “Swag Music.” The next day Daily Dot and Laughing Squid wrote about it, and Boing Boing shared the video on February 18. On February 20, David Mullen posted one of the first parodies, with two owls dancing to the same song. The cat became an online dubstep icon. The videos then inspired further spoofs set to the same track.
