In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Sample Text” is a rare card of the Memes World series 76, number 22502 of the collection, and the 1st best-known meme of its 298 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Sample Text” meme mean?
Originally “Sample Text” just means a dummy line that the user is meant to overwrite. The humour comes from forgetting it, or keeping it deliberately as an in-joke. It shows up stamped across gameplay clips, dramatic montage parodies and absurd snippets, where it plays the part of a solemn caption. The meme is also used to mock sloppy content or an empty sentence that clearly was never proofread before being posted.
Where does the “Sample Text” meme come from?
Sony Creative Software released Sony Vegas Pro 1.0 on 25 January 2003. When a user adds a text layer, the program shows “Sample Text” to signal that the font can be customised. Some video makers ended up leaving it untouched. On 21 November 2013, iTheRainbowDash posted a montage parody that laid the text over a Call of Duty player. On 13 February 2014, Snipars uploaded a video in which Gordon Hurd, a Fiverr testimonial maker, reads the caption aloud, and it passed 1.4 million views within a year. More edits followed, including “MLG Sample Text” and a version set to Toto’s “Africa”.
