In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Bill Nye Tho” is a common card of the Memes World series 76, number 22570 of the collection, and the 70th best-known meme of its 298 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Bill Nye Tho” meme mean?
Bill Nye Tho stands for “deep late-night thought” humour: a made-up science fact delivered in the dreamy voice of a science explainer. The meme plays on the contrast between Bill Nye's serious image and absurd remarks, like wondering why a group of squid isn't called a “squad.” People use it to share a quirky observation, a funny fake fact, or a tweet that makes your head spin. The tone is fond and amused.
Where does the “Bill Nye Tho” meme come from?
The Twitter account @Bill_Nye_tho was created in July 2012 by Lucas Gardner, a comedy writer who also wrote for Laughspin. A Tumblr was set up on July 17, 2012 to archive the tweets. Two days later, Twitter temporarily suspended the account for impersonating a public figure. On July 22, BuzzFeed ran a list of standout tweets, followed by a compilation from The Chive in August. The tweet “do u ever just stop and say damn most of me is water” became one of its most popular on September 8, 2012. In September, Twitter suspended the account a second time as it neared 200,000 followers. Gardner revealed he was the author, a backup account launched, and a Change.org petition asked for the suspension to be lifted. The original account was reinstated on October 23, 2013, and a Facebook page, “The Best of Bill Nye Tho,” opened on December 10, 2014.
