What does the “C’est du carton meme” meme mean?
The meme packs a child’s letdown into a few seconds: you are promised a cake, you get cardboard, and the bad surprise is doubled by the news that no real cake exists. The comedy comes from the sincere outrage at a prank judged cruel. People use it when a promise falls through, when a reward turns out to be fake, or when a joke goes a little too far. It also lets you dramatize a small everyday injustice with humor: a canceled meal, an empty gift, a hope that was let down.
Where does the “C’est du carton meme” meme come from?
The meme comes from a family prank scene. A mother shows her child a fake cake made of cardboard, then explains she does not even have a real one to offer. The child’s reaction carries the whole clip: faced with the joke, he says “C’est méchant!”, with a sincerity internet users immediately adopted. The contrast between the festive setting, the tempting look of the cake and the truth of the cardboard makes the scene easy to read even without context. The phrase “C’est du carton!” then drifted away from the clip to describe any disappointment or light deception, and now travels in edits and comment sections.
