What does the “Doug et Doug” meme mean?
The meme belongs to the inside-joke family. Its power comes from repetition: Mcfly and Carlito bring absurd lines back from one video to the next until the audience repeats them in chorus. Saying “Doug et Doug” signals that you belong to the community, greets the duo, or slips in a reference only regular viewers will catch. The humour comes as much from the shared memory as from the sound of the phrase itself.
Where does the “Doug et Doug” meme come from?
Mcfly et Carlito are two French video makers and comedians, David Coscas and Raphaël Carlier, friends since high school in Bois-Colombes. They posted their first YouTube video on 7 November 2016 and built their name on challenges, sketches and absurd concepts, after earlier stints on the radio station Le Mouv’ and with the Golden Moustache collective. Their humour leans on running gags, jokes that return episode after episode and become landmarks for subscribers. “Doug et Doug” is one of them: lifted out of the videos, it circulates in comments, edits and messages between fans.
