“Le quatre quatre gris” meme: meaning, origin and rare card

What does the “Le quatre quatre gris” meme mean?

The meme plays on logic going off the rails. Someone asks whether a vehicle belongs to them, and the answer drifts into an unrelated anecdote: “once upon a time I had a black four-by-four”. The nonsense is delivered with total seriousness, which creates the laugh. People use it to answer beside the point, to comment on a conversation going in all directions, or to celebrate fully committed absurdity. It recalls the series’ tone, where characters take themselves far too seriously.

Where does the “Le quatre quatre gris” meme come from?

The meme comes from Platane, a French sitcom created by Éric Judor and Hafid F. Benamar, aired on Canal+ from 5 September 2011 to 30 December 2019. Co-directed by Judor and Denis Imbert, the show relies on self-mockery, with guests playing exaggerated versions of themselves. The 4x4 scene runs like this: someone asks “Il est à vous ?”, then adds “Écoutez c’est trop marrant. Parce que jadis j’avais un quatre quatre noir !”. The line, absurd and delivered with aplomb, was picked up by fans as an example of the show’s humor.
