Where does the “Jedi Mind Meld” meme come from?
The phenomenon began on Friday, March 1, 2013, during a White House press briefing regarding budget sequestration. President Barack Obama was answering questions from journalists, including CNN's Chief White House Correspondent Jessica Yellin. To describe the difficulty of persuading lawmakers, he coined the phrase « Jedi mind meld ». This hybrid term combines the « Jedi mind trick » from Star Wars with the « Vulcan mind meld » from Star Trek. The video went viral immediately. Twitter users seized upon the term to gently correct the Commander-in-Chief. Later that evening, George Takei, a Star Trek icon, defended the expression on his show, validating the collective humor around this unique pop-culture fusion.
