What does the “La Barbichette Song d'Afida Turner” meme mean?
People post the clip when someone takes a tiny thing terribly seriously, and does it well. It also fits a standoff where both sides are stuck together: the rhyme says exactly that — each holds the other, and whoever laughs first loses. Either way the comedy comes from the gap between the polished production and the material, a children’s rhyme. The energy is sincere, never ironic, which makes the clip all the more quotable.
Where does the “La Barbichette Song d'Afida Turner” meme come from?
The video was posted on YouTube in 2024. Afida Turner, a singer and television personality familiar to French audiences since the 2000s, performs “La barbichette”, a traditional French children’s rhyme whose words — “je te tiens, tu me tiens, par la barbichette” — belong to the folk repertoire. The treatment is that of a real track: musical production, staging and a sung performance, far from the spoken version children chant while holding each other’s chin. That deliberate mismatch is what carried the clip, reused mostly as very short sequences and screenshots. Reposts keep the opening line and almost always credit the performer rather than the rhyme.
