What does the “La VF c'est de la merde” meme mean?
The phrase bluntly condenses the recurring debate among anime fans between the subtitled original version and the French dub. It works as a shorthand for defending, without nuance, the side that prefers the original Japanese voice acting, seen as more faithful to the performance. Reused as a meme, the line is dropped as a caption or comment to reignite this classic anime-community debate, often with a deliberately over-the-top tone that is exactly what makes it funny.
Where does the “La VF c'est de la merde” meme come from?
The phrase reuses the title of a video by French YouTuber Regelegorila, about the recurring debate among anime and film fans between the subtitled original version and the French dub. The deliberately provocative title directly poses the question of being for or against French dubbing, before laying out arguments from both sides. The line has been reused outside the video itself as a blunt summary of the pro-subtitles stance, turned into a meme to reignite this recurring anime-community debate with the same sharp tone.
