In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Bolsonaro Holding a Fish” is a common card of the Brazilian Memes pack, number 152 of the collection, and the 1st best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Bolsonaro Holding a Fish” meme mean?
The meme plays on the contrast between Bolsonaro's solemn pose and whatever ridiculous place he gets pasted into, from inside a fridge to a rock concert. It is used to poke fun at anything that looks out of place, blending political mockery with the rough-edged aesthetic of early 2010s internet photoshops.
Where does the “Bolsonaro Holding a Fish” meme come from?
The original photo was taken during an environmental inspection at the Tamoios Ecological Station in Angra dos Reis, where Jair Bolsonaro, then a federal congressman, was caught fishing in a protected area. The shot, showing him shirtless and sunburnt with a dead fish in hand, had circulated since the early 2010s on blogs and family photo albums before finding a second life on social media. In June 2016 the format got two dedicated homes: the Twitter account @BolsonaroPeixe and the Facebook page “Bolsonaro com peixe na mão em vários lugares,” both posting edits that dropped the same pose into wildly different settings. Bolsonaro himself, along with his son, publicly laughed along with the joke.
