Where does the “URSAL” meme come from?
The term was coined in 2001 by sociologist Maria Lúcia Victor Barbosa in an ironic article, “Os Companheiros,” published on December 9, about the Foro de São Paulo. She wrote “União das Republiquetas Socialistas da América Latina.” The acronym then spread through blogs and videos. On August 9, 2018, during the first televised presidential debate, on Band, candidate Cabo Daciolo asked Ciro Gomes about URSAL. Ciro answered that he did not know what it was. Social media filled with jokes.
