What does the “Valesca the Great Thinker” meme mean?

The meme plays on putting a funk lyric on the same level as a philosophical quote, blending Valesca's name with that of famous thinkers. Behind the joke, it also raises a real question: why couldn't a funk singer be called a thinker?

Where does the “Valesca the Great Thinker” meme come from?

In early April 2014, teacher Antônio Kubitschek gave a multiple-choice philosophy exam to over 400 high school students at a public school in the Federal District, in Brasília. Question 11 referenced "the great contemporary thinker Valesca Popozuda" and asked students to complete a line from the song "Beijinho no Ombro". A student photographed the question and posted it online, sparking wide media coverage and a debate about funk, intellectual elitism and gender prejudice. On April 8, 2014, the Facebook page "Valesca Grande Pensadora" appeared, stacking up wordplay between the singer's name and philosophers, reaching 14,343 likes before posting stopped that October. The teacher defended the question by comparing it to the Socratic method.
