What does the “You are a dreamer, du!” meme mean?
People send it to someone whose plans sound too good to be true: a millionaire project in six months, a dream date, a diet pledge. The closing “du”, flung like a jab, adds the gesture of a pointing finger. The line mixes fondness and teasing, like a friend laughing kindly at the other’s illusions.
Where does the “You are a dreamer, du!” meme come from?
The phrase blends English and German, a habit German purists call Denglisch, a contraction of Deutsch and Englisch. The “du” is the German pronoun for the familiar “you”, and here it lands after the English sentence like a full stop with a flourish. No public fact fixes the author or date of its first occurrence for certain; the expression spread as an image caption and as a reply in German-speaking chats.
