What does the “Isch over” meme mean?
People drop “Isch over” to declare, in a dry and solemn tone, that a situation is closed: the end of a match, a debate, a party or a hope. The phonetic spelling is as funny as the verdict. It lends the phrase the voice of a stern politician who leaves no room for argument, and it happily gets stuck onto tiny stakes.
Where does the “Isch over” meme come from?
The meme dates from 2015. Wolfgang Schäuble, a CDU politician, served as federal finance minister from 2009 to 2017, and his image as a blunt-spoken keeper of the purse fed plenty of internet jokes that year. The English title of the meme says the line is delivered “Schäuble style”: “it’s over” is reproduced the way a German speaker would pronounce it, hence the “Isch”. Users then lifted the phrase out of its setting and pasted it on any picture.
