Where does the “Peekaboo, Merkel!” meme come from?
On 18 November 2008, during the Italian-German summit in Trieste, Berlusconi welcomed Chancellor Angela Merkel on Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia. He hid behind one of the square’s flag-bearing pillars, then jumped out to surprise her with a “cucù.” An amused Merkel spread her arms and exclaimed “Silvio!” before the two leaders embraced warmly. Back in Rome, Berlusconi joked with journalists about the episode, which helped cement his lasting reputation as a gaffe-prone showman both in Italy and abroad.
