What does the “Let Ascanio In” meme mean?
Italians post this on social media every January 8th as a running in-joke tied to the misheard lyric, with no real connection to the original Persian song's meaning. It's a yearly ritual rather than an everyday phrase.
Where does the “Let Ascanio In” meme come from?
The Persian song 'Pariyah', performed by Shahram Shabpareh in 1986, was later reposted by YouTube channel Celestino Camicia under titles like 'Esce ma non mi rosica' and 'Hey lascia entrare Ascanio', with phonetic Italian subtitles turning the Persian lyrics into the nonsensical line 'Lascia entrare Ascanio dall'8 di gennaio' ('let Ascanio in from January 8th'). The coincidence turned the video into an annual tradition: every January 8th, Italian internet users repost the clip and the quote.
