In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Tafazzi” is a rare card of the Italian Memes pack, number 26 of the collection, and the 26th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.

What does the “Tafazzi” meme mean?

Italians invoke Tafazzi whenever someone damages their own interests through sheer stubbornness or clumsiness, especially in sports and political commentary. The adjective “tafazziano” describes an own goal, a self-defeating decision, or a plan that backfires on the people who chose it.

Where does the “Tafazzi” meme come from?

The character first appeared in 1987 in sketches by the trio Aldo, Giovanni e Giacomo, without yet showing his masochistic streak. His final look, a white jock strap and an empty plastic bottle, debuted in 1992 in the stage show “Ritorno al Gerundio” at Milan’s Zelig theatre, alongside Marina Massironi, Flavio Oreglio and Antonio Cornacchione. In a superhero parody sketch, Giacomo Poretti gave Tafazzi an absurd power: hitting his own groin while singing “Gam Gam”. Television broadcasts later spread the routine nationwide.
