Italians use “Potevo rimanere offeso!” to downplay a disaster narrowly avoided, with a deliberately disproportionate calm given the real danger involved. It is the art of underselling an incident that could have ended very badly.
Where does the “I Could Have Been Hurt!” meme come from?
The three characters were created in 1996 to parody “Ultimo minuto”, a Raitre show built around ordinary people surviving mortal dangers unscathed. The trio set their parody in a stereotyped, Italian-speaking Switzerland, narrated by the voice-over of Maurizio Trombini. Stylist Gervasoni, consumed by envy of his neighbour Rezzonico, repeatedly tries to harm him, always foiled by the providential arrival of policeman Hüber; Rezzonico never notices and considers Gervasoni a good friend.
