Where does the “And I Pay!” meme come from?
Totò, born Antonio de Curtis, appeared in roughly ninety-seven films over a four-decade film career, alongside his stage work, and built an image as a Neapolitan comic permanently indignant at abuses and forced expenses. One of his best-known films from that period, “47 morto che parla” (1950), directed by Carlo Ludovico Bragaglia from Ettore Petrolini’s play, follows a miserly baron who repeatedly loses his fortune. The exclamation “E io pago!” belongs to this register of characters suffering an expense they consider scandalous, a recurring comic device in Totò’s comedies that ended up circulating on its own.
