What does the “Partymaker” meme mean?
The word, often used with heavy irony, points at someone who sets the mood or thinks themselves essential to a party. Paired with Pika's track, it soundtracks edits where the music's energy clashes comically with mundane or absurd footage, which is exactly the effect people are going for when they use it.
Where does the “Partymaker” meme come from?
Russian artist Pika's track “Патимейкер” was released as an official video clip in 2016 and quickly became a viral soundtrack for many edited videos on the Russian-language internet, a usage confirmed by the clip's lasting presence in YouTube search results alongside its many reuses. The card dates the meme to 2016, tagged as Runet, matching the track's release year. The English word “partymaker”, literally someone who animates a party, drifted into an ironic online usage detached from its original flattering meaning, applied instead to situations where the claimed atmosphere does not really match the footage shown.
