In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Nyash-myash” is a rare card of the Russian Memes pack, number 116 of the collection, and the 40th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Nyash-myash” meme mean?
The meme comes from an awkward moment: Natalia Poklonskaya, a prosecutor whose youthful look had been commented on across social media, tried to respond to people calling her “cute” by blurting out the nonsensical phrase “nyash, myash” in an interview to assert her authority. Far from calming things down, the phrase went viral and now symbolizes a moment when someone tries to look serious but produces the opposite effect.
Where does the “Nyash-myash” meme come from?
In 2014, during Russia's annexation of Crimea, Natalia Poklonskaya served as prosecutor of the Republic of Crimea. Her looks, seen as cute by many internet users, earned her the nickname “nyasha” on social media. Trying to shut down those comments during an interview, she said the phrase “nyash, myash”, declaring she would tolerate “no nyash, myash” as prosecutor. The expression immediately became a meme, later cemented by the music video “Nyash Myash” from Russian musician and YouTuber Enjoykin, who combined two memes from the same period in an anime-inspired style.
