What does the “Argo chain” meme mean?
The meme revolves around an exaggeratedly solemn sales tone applied to a very ordinary object, a metal chain presented as an exceptional piece of jewelry. It gets quoted to mock any situation where a mundane product is sold or presented as if it were a luxury item, by imitating the original seller's misplaced seriousness.
Where does the “Argo chain” meme come from?
The commercial for the “Muzhskaya tsep Argo”, a men's chain sold under the name “Argo”, circulated in 2015 on the runet, the Russian-language internet, where its grandiose sales tone struck viewers. The salesman presents the object with an emphasis wildly out of proportion to its actual simplicity, which was enough to turn the clip into a meme: its name and intonation get reused to mock, by analogy, any marketing pitch that dresses up an ordinary product.
