What does the “Calm down lemur” meme mean?
The meme invites someone to relax over a situation that does not deserve so much fuss, in a light rather than bossy tone. The lemur's total calm in the image reinforces the message: it gets sent to someone getting worked up over very little, as a reply to an anxious message or a pointless flare-up.
Where does the “Calm down lemur” meme come from?
The meme appeared in 2013 on the Russian-language internet (Runet), built around the deliberately misspelled Russian word for “calm down”, paired with the image of a deadpan lemur holding out its paw. The card dates it to 2013, Runet format, card no. 223; no further detail about the original account or page behind the image could be confirmed.
