What does the “MIDI” meme mean?

MIDI names both a standard and a sound: the recognizable tone of basic synthesizers that played the little tunes on old websites, games and ringtones. In meme culture, it evokes early-web nostalgia, rough covers of pop songs and oddities such as Black MIDI. People bring it up to describe music stripped down to the basics, simple and a bit kitschy, yet instantly recognizable by anyone who browsed the early web.

Where does the “MIDI” meme come from?

According to Know Your Meme, the idea began in June 1981 when Roland founder Ikutaro Kakehashi proposed a shared format to Tom Oberheim and Dave Smith, who also ran synthesizer companies. After two years of joint work, the standard was presented to the public in Keyboard magazine; the entry gives 1982 as the reference year. It is now maintained by the MIDI Association. On the internet side, “MIDI animations,” which show music as colored blocks, became popular in October 2007 on Nico Nico Douga. Black MIDI refers to pieces with so many notes that the score looks nearly black. On June 20, 2015, Reddit user midi_man shared a collection of more than 130,000 MIDI files. “MP3 to MIDI” remixes turn songs into simplified synth versions.
