In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Mr Rental” is a common card of the Memes World series 76, number 22564 of the collection, and the 63rd best-known meme of its 298 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Mr Rental” meme mean?
Mr Rental is an absurd character who stands for quality craftsmanship in mashups and music rips, and for cheerful contempt toward anyone paying full price instead of renting. The joke lives in the gap between a very earnest rental-company mascot and wildly off-beat fan humour. People post him to roast a lazy edit, to praise a great rip, or just to laugh at a commercial character turned internet legend.
Where does the “Mr Rental” meme come from?
Mr Rental began as the mascot of an Australian rental business founded by Glen and Kerrianne Hickman on Bribie Island, north of Brisbane. Its official Facebook page started posting memes in 2015, the first notable example being “The Rentinator,” a spoof of Terminator Genisys published on June 30, 2015. In 2016 the page grew in popularity by playing up the “chumps,” people who buy instead of renting. The character first appeared in a SiIvaGunner video on July 11, 2016, during a SiIvaDirect stream. The Facebook page then referred to “Mr Gunner” as a close friend. On August 20, 2016, a mashup in which he sings about his likes set his lore: he loves high-quality rips and hates low-quality mashups. Know Your Meme added its entry in October 2016.
