In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “La VAR (Popcorn)” is a rare card of the Permanent Edition French Twitch Memes Season 1, number 16 of the collection, and the 20th best-known meme of its 78 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “La VAR (Popcorn)” meme mean?
VAR is football’s video assistant referee. Demanding the VAR in a chat means asking to rewatch a scene to settle an argument, whether over a disputed line, a point or a misheard sentence. The joke is that there is no referee: everyone wants a ruling but nobody has the authority to give one. It is used to ask for a replay, to challenge a decision, or simply to mock a bad-faith disagreement, which is common in team games.
Where does the “La VAR (Popcorn)” meme come from?
The card places the scene in November 2020, during a Popcorn evening at Domingo’s. Popcorn is a live entertainment show with guests from the creator world, and its games often spark rule debates. Domingo even dedicated a video to chat management during a big live, a sign of how strongly the show moves audiences. In the card’s clip, at the slightest dispute the chat calls for the VAR and the action is rewound, with no referee. The phrase then spread across chat discussions for any contested situation.
