What does the “Rien de tel qu'une femme pour faire le ménage” meme mean?
The quote gets used for any statement that aimed at clever and landed flat. It works as a comment under clumsy messaging, a failed pun, a badly judged political line. Online it is also quoted straight, to call out the stereotype it carries rather than the delivery. Either way the interest is in the backlash and not in the cleaning, which is why the line travels far from the campaign stop that produced it.
Where does the “Rien de tel qu'une femme pour faire le ménage” meme come from?
On 11 May 2015, Pécresse, then the Les Républicains candidate in the Île-de-France regional elections, joined the clearing of a former camp in Aulnay-sous-Bois and said the line on camera, gloves and shovel in hand. Criticism followed at once over the stereotype it repeats, in the middle of a campaign. Months later, by then president of the regional council, she told BFMTV on 6 January 2016 that it had not been a joke and stood by the words as said. The quote is now listed among the moments that shaped her record on gender equality, and circulates as an edited clip, without the clean-up operation that produced it.
