What does the “Anyme Johnny” meme mean?
Yelling “ALLUMER LE FEU” means setting off euphoria: people post it to get a crowd going, to greet the start of an event or to celebrate a burst of collective madness. Stretched letters and strings of exclamation marks imitate a singer’s voice pushed to the limit on stage. The meme is funny for its excess and for the image of a whole audience belting out the chorus. It also works as a reaction to anything full of energy, from sport to a night out.
Where does the “Anyme Johnny” meme come from?
“Allumer le feu” is a Johnny Hallyday song, with lyrics by Zazie and music by Pascal Obispo. A live version from the Stade de France, recorded on 11 September 1998, is among the singer’s most watched clips, alongside a remastered official video. The chorus, bellowed at full volume, turned into an online line of enthusiasm, typed with drawn-out letters to mimic the shout. Quoted in comments, captions and messages, it calls up the fervour of a packed stadium.
