English meet French on Sea Of Thieves ⛵ ⚓ (ObudShaer)In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Are you Spanish?” is an epic card of the Memes World series 76, number 22615 of the collection, and the 91st best-known meme of its 298 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Are you Spanish?” meme mean?
Taken literally, the sentence is a simple question about nationality. The joke lies in the contrast between the booming, confident delivery and the heavily accented English that comes back from the other ship. People post it to tease a language mix-up, to greet a stranger with way too much energy, or as a wink to Sea of Thieves fans. It also works as a template: swap the nationality and the scene becomes a fresh variation on the same idea.
Where does the “Are you Spanish?” meme come from?
The scene comes from the pirate adventure game Sea of Thieves. An English-speaking captain spots another ship and shouts “ARE YOU SPANISH?!” through the speaking trumpet. On the other vessel, a French crew answers in strongly accented English. The clip spread on YouTube as “English meet French on Sea Of Thieves”, uploaded by the channel ObudShaer, whose description invites English speakers to hear the French crew’s command of their language. It then spawned many spin-offs: a Spanish-meets-French version, an encounter with Italian players, and a hand-drawn animatic of the scene. The card calls it the oldest and most famous meme of the community.
