In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Eh Marine” is a common card of the Memes World series 76, number 22534 of the collection, and the 29th best-known meme of its 298 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Eh Marine” meme mean?
Shouting “Eh Marine!” announces a blunt surprise. The name is called, the person turns around, and the slap lands with no transition. The humor comes from the shock and the repetition of the re-enactments, where only the victim’s activity changes before the hit. People use it to start a joke among friends, to comment on an unexpected fall, or to reference this old-internet classic. It is a gag, and nobody is encouraged to try it on real strangers.
Where does the “Eh Marine” meme come from?
According to Know Your Meme, the prank comes from a French video originally titled “Dans ta Gueule”. It was filmed in March 2006, posted on YouTube, and later deleted. Its star, Marine, said she was 16 at the time. Re-uploads of the original kept circulating afterward. The idea, copied in re-enactments, is to call out “Eh Marine!” before an unexpected slap. Some videos are titled “Evelyn” or “Evelin” because foreign viewers mishear the name, which keeps the legend alive. Re-enactments change what the first person is doing, such as singing or watching a screen, before the slap. Others remix the original in a YouTube Poop style. The site’s entry dates to December 10, 2009.
