In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Mic Spam” is a common card of the Memes World series 76, number 22535 of the collection, and the 29th best-known meme of its 298 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.

What does the “Mic Spam” meme mean?

Mic spam means pushing a constant stream of sound into the microphone of an online multiplayer match: air horns, screams, song clips, silly voices. For teammates it is pure irritation, since callouts get drowned out and nobody can coordinate. For the spammer it is a cheap joke that never gets old. People use the phrase to complain about a lobby gone unbearable, to call out a player who will not stop, or jokingly to describe a friend who talks nonstop without saying anything useful. It almost always carries a negative tone, even when the clip is funny.

Where does the “Mic Spam” meme come from?

The earliest known mention of mic spam dates to April 30, 2006, on the hardware forum [H]ard Forums. One member asked how to play music through his microphone in Counter-Strike, and other users replied mostly by looking for ways to mute these so-called mic spammers. The habit then moved on to Counter-Strike: Source, Battlefield and Team Fortress 2, which was documenting it by April 2009. Tools made it easier: Half-Life DJ, released in April 2007, let players trigger sounds on the fly, and an Urban Dictionary entry defined the “mic spammer” in May 2007. YouTube then spread the idea, with a Counter-Strike: Source compilation in March 2008 and, in April 2011, a clip of a player remixing his opponents’ voices live.
