What does the “Great Job Jeremy” meme mean?

“Great job, Jeremy” is an over-the-top compliment aimed at a tiny accomplishment. The tone is patronizing and playful: you congratulate someone for doing something anyone can do. The meme grew out of the awkward comedy of a stage demo where every move of the presenter was applauded. People use it to tease a friend who pulls off an everyday action, to comment on an overlong tutorial, or to cheer themselves on with self-mockery. It works perfectly as a short reply.

Where does the “Great Job Jeremy” meme come from?

The line comes from E3 2011, the video game trade show. On June 6, 2011, Sony showed Medieval Moves: Deadmund’s Quest, a game built for its PlayStation Move motion controller. On stage, Jeremy Ray, a senior producer at Sony, ran the demo. Beside him, Umrao Mayer, president of Zindagi Games, kept cheering him on with lines like “Great job, Jeremy,” “Nice shot, Jeremy” and “Good job, Jeremy.” The same day, a Reddit user posted a rage comic on r/gaming and another shared a photo of Barack Obama with the caption. Still on June 6, YouTuber TheTrueHaddock uploaded “The E3 Song (Great Job Jeremy),” a remix over electronic music. On June 7, IGN posted a montage video titled “Great job Jeremy!” on Facebook, and the next day another YouTuber published a dubstep version.
