What does the “Il pleut mais il pleut blanc !” meme mean?
The phrase expresses total surprise at something unfamiliar, especially a weather event seen for the first time. It gets reused to gently tease someone discovering snow or cold weather, or more broadly to illustrate a cultural gap between two countries. The sincere, panicked tone of the original call makes the line both touching and funny.
Where does the “Il pleut mais il pleut blanc !” meme come from?
The phrase comes from a viral video showing a man, apparently newly arrived in Europe, calling his mother back in his home country to describe what he sees falling from the sky: snow, which he describes with confusion as “white rain.” The contrast between his sincere bewilderment and how ordinary the phenomenon is for people in countries where it snows regularly made the scene especially funny to viewers. The clip spread widely on social media as a short video, then was picked up and commented on by many comedy accounts, with neither the man's exact identity nor the call's date ever confirmed.
