Where does the “Saluting Everything” meme come from?
In October 2017, while still a federal deputy, Jair Bolsonaro saluted the United States flag at a campaign event in Deerfield Beach, Florida, amid chants of “USA, USA, USA” from the crowd. Already president, he repeated the gesture at a Brazil-United States Chamber of Commerce lunch in Dallas, Texas, where he received a “Personality of the Year” award and even changed his own campaign slogan to “Brazil and the United States above all”; the IstoÉ Dinheiro report on that lunch dates it to May 16, 2019, but the Museu de Memes, this card's source, places the same lunch in May 2018. Images from both episodes went viral, and internet users began making edits placing Bolsonaro saluting anything, from the American flag to everyday objects.
