On September 23, 2012, José Serra, the PSDB candidate for mayor of São Paulo, visited the Délio de Carvalho sports school in Ermelino Matarazzo, on the city's east side, during his campaign against Fernando Haddad. Wearing dress trousers, he attempted to kick a penalty for the press: he struck the ball, which the goalkeeper blocked, but his own shoe flew off his foot and went into the other goal, caught by photographers on site. The image spread quickly online and spawned edits placing Serra into video game scenes, historic photographs and footage set to “Gangnam Style”, that year's global hit. Serra reacted with humor: “I had a feeling that was going to happen. That was a nice shoe goal.”
