Where does the “What a Mappazzone” meme come from?
The word mappazzone was popularized by Bruno Barbieri, one of MasterChef Italia's longtime judges, as early as the show's fifth season aired in 2016, to describe an overloaded, disorganized dish lacking harmony. The line kept resurfacing in later seasons, notably against contestants whose plates lacked clarity, such as during the eighth season in 2019, and it became one of the tormentoni, the signature catchphrases most associated with Barbieri's sharp style.
