What does the “Buondì Asteroid” meme mean?
People share the Buondì asteroid to comment on something that crashes into a peaceful situation without warning, usually with an ironic tone about how disproportionate the disruption is. It also fits edits where a sudden shock cuts a quiet scene short.
Where does the “Buondì Asteroid” meme come from?
The scene comes from an Italian TV ad for Motta's Buondì, the brand regarded as the creator of Italy's first true 'merendina' snack, aired in the second half of the 2000s. A parent doubts the point of having the snack at breakfast, so the ad literally drops an asteroid on the table to make its case, in a deliberately exaggerated tone. Years later, Italian social media revived the clip as a meme for any sudden, over-the-top interruption of a calm situation.
