In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Smarmella!” is a rare card of the Italian Memes pack, number 73 of the collection, and the 76th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Smarmella!” meme mean?
The word smarmellare is used to describe, in film production or elsewhere, work done in a minimal, effortless way, just to avoid doing a truly careful job.
Where does the “Smarmella!” meme come from?
Boris, a TV series created by Luca Vendruscolo, Giacomo Ciarrapico, and Mattia Torre, centered on fictional director René Ferretti played by Francesco Pannofino, features cinematographer Duccio Patanè, played by Ninni Bruschetta, who only knows two lighting settings, apri tutto, meaning open everything fully without shadows, and chiudi tutto. The verb smarmellare and the adjective smarmellato became, within the show and later in everyday Italian media-industry slang, synonyms for flat, sloppy lighting done to avoid genuine careful work.
How to use the “Smarmella!” meme
- This lighting is all smarmellata, looks like Duccio Patanè did it.
- Stop doing apri tutto on every shot, it flattens everything.
