What does the “Romeu has diarrhea” meme mean?
The meme combines two engines: the collective misadventure of a big club hit by a digestive illness, and the scapegoat the joke chooses, midfielder Oriol Romeu. The card calls him the “worst player on the team”, which is fans’ humour rather than a finding. It is used to mock a player seen as mediocre, to comment on a rough preparation or to describe a passing illness in the voice of a sports pundit.
Where does the “Romeu has diarrhea” meme come from?
The card places the episode in pre-season, when FC Barcelona players were struck by a stomach illness. Oriol Romeu, a Spanish midfielder, was presented as a new signing in Los Angeles during the club’s US tour, according to FC Barcelona’s official video. The mocking line grafted itself onto that context to form a meme: a plain, unfiltered sentence that twists club news. Users then spread the formula through images, captions and match-day comments.
