According to Know Your Meme, the cat photo first appeared in a macro on Trollcats on April 2, 2010, and the first images with the cat’s head on a red-and-yellow background were posted on MemeGenerator and FunnyJunk on June 6, 2010. An image reached Know Your Meme in August 2010 and was picked up on a blog days later. The format took off in April 2011 when users started making their own on QuickMeme, and Smosh published a compilation later that month.
