What does the “Dance Dance World Revolution” meme mean?
Dance Dance World Revolution works as a friendly, festive fan game: each participant has a character dance in the colors of their own country, all to the same looping tune. The meme expresses national pride in a cheerful way, closer to a tribute than a contest. People mention it when talking about early collective fan creations in anime culture, the chain projects where everyone adds a version, and as shorthand for anything endlessly remixable by swapping only the costume, flag or character.
Where does the “Dance Dance World Revolution” meme come from?
It started on August 1, 2009, when artist Yuumei uploaded a fan flash video on DeviantArt as a tribute to the anime Hetalia: Axis Powers. It showed an American-themed character dancing to a looped version of “Positive Vibe,” a track by Newgrounds member NIGHTkilla. A copy followed on YouTube. Fans from several countries, including Australia, Canada, China and Germany, then made their own versions with their national flag colors, while others used different anime or original characters. Yuumei later released a tutorial showing how to make a version. Know Your Meme added the entry on December 23, 2009.
