In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Thumbs Up If You” is a rare card of the Memes World series 76, number 22523 of the collection, and the 20th best-known meme of its 298 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Thumbs Up If You” meme mean?
“Thumbs up if you…” invites others to validate a supposedly common experience with a click, for example listening to a song in a given year. The formula plays on the desire to belong to a group, but it also carries a reputation as an upvote trap, which keeps the mockery going. People quote it as parody to make fun of comments chasing easy success, or use it sincerely to share a collective memory. Either way, everyone instantly recognizes the pattern and knows what reaction it is fishing for.
Where does the “Thumbs Up If You” meme come from?
YouTube added thumbs up and thumbs down voting to comments on August 23, 2007, and launched a “Highest Rated Comments” section on March 25, 2010, soon after which pleas for upvotes spread. On September 9, 2010, Urlesque called these comments proof that humanity is doomed. More criticism followed: ADoseofBuckley posted a video in March 2011, and Seoul Beats listed the formula among clichéd YouTube comments in May 2012. A variant, “Thumbs up if you’re watching in X,” appeared around 2011 with future years attached, and was added to TV Tropes in February 2012. On March 18, 2013, undertakerfreak1127 posted a video asking users to stop. A copypasta even asks viewers to upvote if they are watching over the next hundred years.
