What does the “Luffy Gear 5 chokbar” meme mean?
The meme expresses awe at something over the top. “Chokbar” is French-language slang stressing how impressive something is, and sticking it onto Gear 5 means the scene is beyond anything. People use it to comment on a sporting or gaming feat, a striking anime moment, an unexpected success or a friend’s spectacular level. The feeling is fan enthusiasm, with a wink at the hyped-up tone of manga communities. The meme works whenever you want to shout “that’s insane” while quoting a famous hero.
Where does the “Luffy Gear 5 chokbar” meme come from?
Gear 5 is the transformation of Monkey D. Luffy, hero of the One Piece manga and anime. Episode 1071 of the anime, titled “Gear 5”, struck fans with its free-wheeling staging, full of humour and warped movement, the opposite of the usual tension of fights. In France, the scene was commented on, spoofed and remixed in short videos. Adding the slang “chokbar” to the name of the form is a language game specific to the French-speaking community: it gives the name a street flavour and turns the episode title into a cry of admiration. In this shape, “Luffy chokbar” circulates online as a little shortcut for saying a transformation is simply the best.
