What does the “You’re Under Arrest at the Inquiry” meme mean?
The phrase is used to mock any overblown argument where someone demands a disproportionate punishment in the heat of the moment, or to comment on a tense situation as if it were a reality show. The contrast with “teje solto” (“let him go free”), the committee president's reply denying the request, also became a joke about authorities contradicting themselves when it is time to decide something.
Where does the “You’re Under Arrest at the Inquiry” meme come from?
On May 12, 2021, during testimony by former Communications Secretary Fabio Wajngarten before Brazil's Covid parliamentary inquiry, rapporteur Renan Calheiros accused him of lying about authorizing the “Brazil cannot stop” campaign and said: “I will request your arrest.” Committee president Omar Aziz denied the request, stating “I am no one's jailer.” The session also saw an exchange of insults between Calheiros and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who was defending Wajngarten. The contrast between the arrest demand and its denial became the meme “Renan: teje preso! Aziz: teje solto!”, repeated endlessly online.
