Where does the “Temer’s Luxury Ice Cream” meme come from?
In late December 2016, a procurement bid to stock the Brazilian presidential plane, then under Michel Temer's government, was revealed to be worth 1.748 million reais. Among the items on the list were 500 units of ice cream from the American brand Häagen-Dazs, known for its high price, plus 120 jars of Nutella. The news sparked an almost immediate reaction on Twitter starting on December 27, generating memes and edits that also spread on Facebook, including on pages such as “Corrupção Brasileira Memes”. The contrast stood out because the Temer government was pushing public spending cuts in the middle of an economic crisis. After the backlash, the government canceled the ice cream purchase, stating the president ordered it cancelled as soon as he learned of the list.
