In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Ey, Ey, Eymael” is a common card of the Brazilian Memes pack, number 189 of the collection, and the 1st best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Ey, Ey, Eymael” meme mean?
The meme treats the jingle as a symbol of comic persistence: someone who keeps showing up, election after election, never quite taken seriously, but who also never gives up. Singing or quoting "Ey, Ey, Eymael" is a way of poking fun at that sense of electoral déjà vu familiar to anyone who has followed Brazilian politics for decades.
Where does the “Ey, Ey, Eymael” meme come from?
The jingle was composed in 1985 by José Raimundo de Castro, a tailor and fellow party member of Eymael's, for his campaign for mayor of São Paulo that year. The idea was simple: play on the "ei" sound so common in Brazilian Portuguese and attach it to "mael", creating something catchy and easy to remember. Eymael lost that mayoral race, but kept the jingle for his later candidacies, including several presidential runs over the following decades. Hearing the same song at so many elections, always with modest results at the ballot box, turned the ad jingle into a piece of collective memory, still quoted by voters and internet users long after each campaign ended.
