Where does the “The Cattle King Spins” meme come from?
The scene comes from the opening of 'O Rei do Gado', a 1996 Rede Globo telenovela written by Benedito Ruy Barbosa and directed by Luiz Fernando Carvalho, starring Antônio Fagundes as rancher Bruno Mezenga. In the opening, the actor spins on horseback amid the cattle before turning into gold. In 2015, two computer science students at PUC Minas, João Vitor Vidal and Matheus Santos, then 18, stumbled on the clip in a YouTube rerun and found the spin 'bizarre'. On October 26, 2016, they created the Facebook page 'Todo dia o rei do gado girando com uma música diferente', swapping the music for funk tracks, TV theme songs and even 'The Sound of Silence'. The page passed 50,000 likes in under a week.
