What does the “I Want Coffee!” meme mean?
The meme fits whenever someone complains about a tiny detail with completely disproportionate intensity, as if something essential were missing. It also works as a joke about starting the day grumpy because there’s no coffee around.
Where does the “I Want Coffee!” meme come from?
During a TV news segment in São Miguel do Oeste, in western Santa Catarina state, a man standing next to the reporter steps into frame the moment she finishes talking, visibly annoyed. His complaint has nothing to do with the story: there’s no coffee on site, and he wants some. The spontaneous, over-the-top delivery caught people’s attention online, and the clip was cut up, shared and remixed into videos, edits and audio clips. Over time, “I want coffee!” broke away from the original report and became a stand-in for any loud complaint about a basic thing that’s missing.
