Where does the “The Gourmet Ray” meme come from?
The meme was born on Twitter on November 27, 2014, created by an unidentified author, with the superhero “Raio Gourmetizador”, able to strike any popular food and turn it “gourmet”. The classic format uses three images: the first shows the original, cheap product, the second shows chef Gordon Ramsay, and the third shows the “gourmetized” version, far more expensive, after being struck by the ray. The joke satirizes the advertising trend of sticking the word “gourmet” onto popular foods, from brigadeiro to pizza, just to justify much higher prices. Shortly after, a Facebook page called Raio Gourmetizador appeared, which helped spread the meme with illustrations of products “struck” by the ray, and the joke soon extended to other kinds of products, not just food.
